Astigmatism: I see halos around the lights, the headlights of the cars annoy me, I see them stretched.

"I see the halos around the lights, the headlights of the cars annoy me, I see them stretched" this is the symptomatology that some patients may report.

Do not panic, it is nothing serious, it is easily solved, but you need an eye examination, because most likely you have a vision defect called astigmatism.

Astigmatism is due to an alteration in the curvature of the cornea, which should be similar to that of a soccer ball, but in you it is more similar to that of a rugby ball and therefore is not the same on the different meridians.

You see blurred, sometimes distorted and the symptoms are accentuated at night, with light sources.

It can be present in only one eye or in both with different entities and to verify that it is actually present it is necessary to undergo a complete eye examination.

Already from the vision test it will be possible to highlight it, but only that may not be enough, further instrumental tests may be necessary.

Very high astigmatism in some cases are linked to pathological conditions that must be excluded and that need to be treated with specific therapies.

The fundamental instrumental examinations in this case are the corneal topography which allows to quantify the extent of astigmatism with its axis and a mapping of the corneal curvature in each point or the analysis with Pentacam or other advanced technologies that allow to carry out an analysis "Stratigraphic" of the entire corneal structure, to exclude the presence of the concomitance of astigmatism with some corneal pathologies.

If the presence of astigmatism is confirmed as a simple refractive defect and not linked to the presence of pathological changes, there are various solutions, glasses, contact lenses or in some cases refractive surgery (PRK, SMILE, i-Lasik) .
