Prof. Dr. Med

Andrea Cusumano

Prof. Dr. med. Andrea Cusumano is a researcher in Ophthalmology at theUniversity of Rome Tor Vergata, APL Professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn e Adjunct Associate Professor at Weil Medical College of Cornell University from New York. He has been carrying out clinical, research and teaching activities in Italy and abroad for forty years and actively contributes to the implementation of research projects and advanced phase clinical trials, in collaboration with scientists belonging to the most prestigious universities and research institutes. internationally.

Prof. Cusumano devotes particular attention to the study of pathologies that lead to loss of vision and to the new technological platforms that have shown the potential to provide, hopefully not too long, therapeutic approaches capable of halting, or at least slowing down, the progression of these pathologies, with a view to bringing about a significant improvement in the quality of life of a community very extensive of patients. Among the sectors of his greatest interest we find the molecular medical genetics, gene therapy, optogenetics andoptopharmacology.

Making dreams come true in scientific progress.

scientific progress

In addition to these, a special mention goes to the artificial vision, a field of research for which Prof. Cusumano has always had a real predilection. "Return vision to the blind" it is the dream that arose in childhood from an encounter with a “very special” blind child and which then prompted the young Andrea Cusumano to undertake medical studies and later specialization in ophthalmology.

Passionate dreamer, but also a rational scientist and skilled entrepreneur, strong in a well-structured professionalism and a know-how of long experience, Prof. Cusumano created the Italian-German DISAHF Foundation for Ophthalmo-Neurological Research, a co-foundation of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Rome Vision Clinic, the first Ophthalmological Center in Italy where the gold standard of clinical practice and international scientific innovation meet to accelerate and enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic process, always guided, where possible, by the modern conception of personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics.

The successes found by these realities have led to the realization of an ambitious project called Macula & Genoma Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at sponsoring basic research in ophthalmology and the scientific dissemination of new diagnostic and therapeutic data and techniques obtained in the study of ocular pathologies of major social importance.

Considered a opinion leader international in the ophthalmology sector, Prof. Cusumano is often invited to participate in medical information programs and dissemination spaces, often sponsored by the Ministry of Health, and to give interviews to the main national and international newspapers.

His latest project, in chronological order, is the foundation of the Macula & Genoma Foundation USA, which extends and strengthens the goals already implemented by the Italian Macula & Genoma Foundation, with the precious scientific contribution of colleagues of the highest caliber, with whom Prof. Cusumano has long shared not only scientific projects and research lines of great importance, but also and above all a futuristic vision of science and medicine, which always and in any case are and must remain at the service and for the benefit of all humanity.
